It happened to me on Sunday when I was pulling out of the HSN show.

My shift engagement wasn't so smooth. I went through all 5 gears entering the freeway.

As I was downshifting and put it in neutral, the stick shift leaned to the right. It was difficult driving while the gear was that way. I had to force the the gears to go through the different gates since it wanted to lean to the right. After driving for about 10 minutes, the gear corrected itself and it went center.

Thoughts on this problem?

Thanks in advance!

how are the tranny and/or motor mounts on your car? any unusual slop/play? is there any way to readjust the shifter alignment (like on transverse VWs)?

I don't think the stock ones are very stiff. So you're saying if I change the motor/tranny mounts that may remedy the off center stick shift?

Its a common problem on the late model e36 ZF box. Its caused by a small part inside the case worn and sticking.

The "fix" involves removing the transmission, opening the case, and correcting the issue.

The part is cheap, the labor will make you cry.
