2009 John Cooper Works - First Look
The '09 John Cooper Works is the driving enthusiast's MINI--with more power, more torque, and an overall more sporting demeanor. An optimized air supply, new exhaust tract, and modified turbocharger push overall output to 208 hp (SAE) and 192 lb-ft of peak torque. With the "Overboost" function engaged, the torque figure is increased to a maximum of 207 lb-ft. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The gearbox features identical gear ratios to that of the MINI Cooper S, but the gears themselves have been strengthened to cope with the augmented power output in the John Cooper Works application.
The Works car also includes a retuned sport suspension and brakes. The suspension can be upgraded further with firmer dampers and larger antiroll bars for even more spirited driving potential. The brakes feature fixed calipers finished in red and 12.4-inch front rotors (11-inch rear). Standard equipment also features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), as found in rear-drive BMW applications, and unique to the front-wheel-drive MINI. And the drivetrain incorporates Electronic Lock Differential Control, which allows more power to be put to the ground when, for example, accelerating hard out of a corner. Lightweight 17-inch wheels and high-speed 205/45-series tires are also standard.
Certain exterior styling cues have been implemented to distinguish this car from your ordinary MINI Cooper, like a revised front fascia with a deeper lip spoiler, larger tailpipes, unique wheels, and of course the signature John Cooper Works badging. For those seeking to personalize their car even further, a multitude of factory options are available, including factory and dealer-installed aerodynamics kits.
